I have heard that it gets better after the first one.įor world building - well, it's a fairly small world, based off of Celtic civilisations, and it doesn't forget that Celtic means more than just Britain and Ireland, with the High King living in what I assumed was a Mediterranean or Iberian climate. Characterization was good, the 'main' character is kind of a YA Protagonist but there's a bunch of other viewpoints who are really not. It's competently written and I got into it fairly easily. It's kind of old school, in a very specific British 1970s fantasy way that I'm not sure I can really explain* - it's very much not a 'generic' fantasy, of either the Tolkien knock-off or Grimdark type. Right - what it reminded me most of was a more Celtic-y Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, but with the crazy modern 'multiple viewpoint characters' thing. I have not really read the books that you list, so, uh, this is going to be difficult. One thing to mention though - i can't get into first-person narratives, so those are right out. So with that being said, do you think i can appreciate Gwynne's work? What did you like about his work, what didn't you like?Īlso, feel free to recommend other series you think could work for me. Both writing and world-building are superb with these authors (IMO and YMMV etc etc ).

I am on the look out for a new fantasy series to keep my attention and i am wondering if Gwynne's work could be it. As the title suggests, i am looking for opinions on this series.
